For artists

Your art leaves the studio. Its story should not stay behind.

Record your own art on Philoteknia, free, as its first custodian.

Why record it yourself

Once an artwork leaves the studio, who made it, when, and why is what gets lost first.

Recorded from the start, that history goes with the artwork from one custodian to the next.

What each artwork gets

  • A permanent number.
  • A label with a QR code, to print and put on its back.
  • A record in the public archive, unless you choose to make it private.
  • Its history, added over time: each custodian, each exhibition.
  • While it is in your care, the line “In the artist's own collection, they tell us” on its record and, if the record is public, a place under From the artist in the archive.

How

  1. Photograph it.
  2. Write what you know: its title, the year, the technique, its size, and one sentence about it.
  3. Make sure “I am the artist of this artwork” is ticked.

Then do the same for the next artwork.

When an artwork leaves you

If you give it through Philoteknia, you choose who receives it, from those who apply.

If it is sold or given outside Philoteknia, its new custodian claims the record with the number on its label, and you are asked to confirm. If you decline, or do not answer within 30 days, a person at Philoteknia checks it.

Either way, the line “In the artist's own collection, they tell us” ends there, and the record's history keeps that it was in your own collection.

What it costs

Recording is free, as many artworks as you make.

If you want them, as for every artwork: extended documentation, up to 30 photographs, €5 once per record; a private record, €5 once.

What Philoteknia is not

It is not a shop, and not a portfolio site. It is a permanent record of each artwork, and of everyone who looks after it.
